Mission Statement

In the community - For the community

Vision Statement

We build strong relationships and community connections by encouraging positive change, modelling Christian values, and partnering with other support networks to serve the local community.

Our Story

The House Next Door operates under the umbrella of the HND Community Trust. We are a community hub in the centre of the Roslyn suburb in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The HND Community Trust was established in 2015 to enable effective engagement with the community as well as a greater collaboration with other organisations that work in community health.

A house next door to Church on Vogel (CoV) was purchased, attached, and fully renovated to create a multipurpose community facility. The house has a commercial kitchen, two offices, a lounge, a café and a meeting room that provides an inviting and homely environment. The House Next Door was opened in July 2021. The church auditorium and hall provide an ideal space for running large events and programmes. The HND Community Trust leases the building off CoV.

The House Next Door promotes a holistic approach to community health recognising that mental, spiritual, physical, and relational wellbeing are inseparable. We connect with our community through caring relationships, diverse programmes, and targeted education.

Our Philosophy

First and foremost, we do not consider ourselves an organisation but a community of people. We are part of a church community; part of the local Roslyn community and are integrated into the wider Palmerston North community.

The model of community health that we embrace is the well-known Māori model of Te Whare Tapa Whā made up of taha tinana (physical wellbeing), taha hinengaro (mental wellbeing), taha whānau (family/relational wellbeing), taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing). This model describes community health and wellbeing as a wharenui/meeting house with four walls. If any of the walls are compromised the whole house becomes unstable. The needs we seek to address are diverse and varied across these four aspects of wellbeing. For the HND Community Trust the spiritual wall of this model is based upon a Christian understanding of spirituality.

We welcome all individuals accessing our programmes and services to actively participate and become part of the House Next Door community.

All our programmes are free of charge.
